STONE AGE MAN.

Art and Artefacts CAVE ART

Cave art of about 15,000 years ago created using natural pigments of ground up minerals of Iron oxide and manganese dioxide. Animals formed an important part of mans culture and lifestyle. They relied on them for food and warmth, often making shelters of a wooden framework coverered with skins under a cliff overhang. They hunted the animals and they decorated the walls of the caves they inhabited with images of Deer, Bison, Horses, etc.

A selection of Stone Age Tools made and used by Late Palaeolithic man of the Magdelanian period. They were used for cutting, scraping and piercing holes. They made many other tools, some of which would have been attached to wood or bone handles.

fOSSIL fOLKLORE .

Snakestone

Snake Stone

In Folklore it was believed that fossil Ammonites were in fact headless serpents, turned to stone and cast off the cliffs by a Saxon Abbess, St. Hilda of Whitby in Yorkshire. A similar legend from Keynsham in Somerset has St. Keyna turning the serpents to stone.
It seems that for centuries people have been carving the heads onto the “Serpents” .
